Burundi / Rimiro Natural
Many people may not be as familiar with coffees from Burundi as those from neighboring Tanzania, Rwanda and Uganda, but they are a treat. Virtually all coffees grown in Burundi are the red bourbon variety and, as is common throughout Africa, mostly come from small, individual "backyard" plots of no more than 200-250 trees. Coffees cherries are typically hand-picked by family members and carted to the nearest collection point or washing station for processing. This particular coffee is the cumulative effort of hundreds of small family farms mostly in the area of the Rimiro Central Washing Station, which gives this lot its name.
This natural process coffee is dried outside, whole cherry, in small batches for 3-4 weeks, lending additional sweetness and fruit notes in the cup. Not a fruit bomb per se, this is an easy drinking and satisfying coffee that balances fruit notes and delicate acidity with rich cocoa flavors, not unlike a chocolate covered strawberry. We roast this dense, sugar-packed bean to a solid medium to bring out its full potential.
Although coffee is a critical cash crop in Burundi, income from its cultivation is limited due to the small-scale plots and aging trees. As such, virtually all coffee producers there live below international poverty benchmarks. Purchasing this coffee helps in two ways. At the Rimiro washing station, farmers can purchase new coffee seedlings at or below cost to replace their old, less productive trees. And through our sourcing partner, Wavelength Coffee Roasters has made a direct contribution to purchase livestock such as goats and pigs that can provide both nutrition (in the form of milk and meat) and an additional revenue source for these farmers and their families. Your purchase truly makes a difference, so thank you!

Community Initiatives
In many of the places it is grown, coffee is the core of the local economy; with some help, income from its cultivation can support not just a single farm but an entire community.
Our "Community Initiatives" coffees represent various programs designed to improve living standards at a hyper-local level. In each case, programs are created with input from the people who live there, applying a portion of the proceeds for the benefit of all. Some examples include construction of water filtration systems, financing micro-loans, purchasing livestock, and funding K-12 schools. These programs help to promote stability, self-sufficiency and resiliency in a rapidly changing world.

Air Roasted to Perfection
We use 100% electric, clean air roasting for our coffees.
Air roasting works by suspending the beans in a column of hot air, allowing them to roast more evenly and consistently without picking up unwanted flavors or defects that can happen with drum roasters. Our roasters are designed to produce safe, low-temperature, clean exhaust without filters, catalyzers or afterburners.
Altogether, this means that we can roast clean-tasting coffees more consistently using less energy and with lower emissions than conventional methods.

Circular Packaging
Our coffee cans are manufactured in the USA from 100% domestically sourced steel.
Why steel? Unlike plastic and paper, it's infinitely recyclable and is recovered at a higher rate (72%) than any other food packaging material. It's also the ideal barrier for keeping oxygen, moisture and light away from the beans inside. This, plus an integrated valve, means our coffee stays fresher longer.
Steel cans can also be reused. Bring back your empty Wavelength Coffee Roasters can and we will refill it with your favorite coffee for a discount.
