Founders Jim and Deanna spoke with reporter Joanna Tzouvelis of Wicked Local recently to share the story of how Wavelength Coffee Roasters came to be, what we're up to now, and where we are headed. If you're not familiar, Wicked Local is a division of USA Today that provides local news to more than 160 communities throughout eastern Massachusetts through newspapers and their website WickedLocal.com.
We fully enjoyed our conversation with Joanna, and we think the article she wrote really captures what's important to us and why we started this company.
For example, on the benefits of all-electric air-roasting coffee:
Air roasting is not only better for the environment, it also helps produce a cleaner tasting coffee, Deanna Varney explained. She said research is ongoing about the health benefits of electric air roasted coffee. "We're not using a gas flame to roast our beans, the beans never come in contact with things like benzene or other byproducts of burning fossil fuels," she said.
And on our sourcing:
When it comes to good coffee, Deanna Varney said it starts with the people who grow it. “That’s the piece we're really focused on, sourcing from people who are taking care of their piece of the world” she said. Growers put so much work into their coffee...they do their best to ensure the bean is really fully expressed in what they roast.
We also spent a morning in our shop with photographer John Walker, who documented Jim roasting a batch of Carlos Pola Anaerobic Pacamara, and Deanna packing and grinding beans. Here are a few select images, but there are MANY more in the published photo gallery and video page.
